Deadspace, a fan fiction short

EPISODE 1

1 OPENING CREDITS 2 INT/SPACIAL STATION/EVENING

We are in a dark, quiet, and cold hallway. Nothing to be heard in this heavy silence, except for a low and constant humming. Suddenly, noises of hits and impacts on a metallic surface break the silence. The noise is coming from the hatch in the mining staff’s locker room. We are slowly progressing into the locker room turned upside-down, covered of blood upon the floor and the walls. Above us, the sound coming from the hatch is getting louder. The hatch then breaks down under the beating.

Snow, carried by the rushing wind, bursts into the room. The figure of a MAN climbs down. He jumps on one of the locker lying on the floor, step down, then take a look around him. He takes off his helmet. Then appears the face of the MAN.

FEMALE VOICE COMING FROM THE HATCH (OFF) Is everything okay?

MAN Yes.

WOMAN Are you sure he came in here Captain?

MAN Isaac gave these coordinates before landing.

WOMAN It’s been a month, you don’t think he could be...

MAN Sara, we didn’t have much in common but I know him! Get back to the ship and stay alert, who knows what lies down here...

ETHAN takes a look by the door to check the hallway. Nothing. ETHAN looks upset. He steps forward; his face bears the marks of stupefaction and terror. He stares the mess on the floor, boxes and lockers stacked and scattered as to keep something away, and more blood. He progresses with much care. In front of him, the few bright spots of light are not enough to see properly. ETHAN turns on a light on his gear then step forward. Some broken pieces break under his feet, and some kind of rubbing noises are distinguishable behind the walls.

ETHAN

Is there anybody here?

Only silence.

ETHAN

(Louder) Is anybody out there? I’m Ethan! Ethan Clark!

The silence remains.

ETHAN

(His hand on his ear) Ethan Clark here, Lieutenant of the “Zeus”, does anybody copy?

Radio silence.

ETHAN

Sara do you copy?

SARA (From the microphone)

Yes Captain.

ETHAN (Looking around him)

There’s one hell of a mess down here, even the radio seems to... A sound in one of the rooms resonates.

ETHAN turns around.

ETHAN (Lowering his voice)

Sara, scan the area and send me the plans of this place. Stay alert, there’s definitely something wrong going on…

SARA (From the microphone)

Right away Cap’n.

We’re moving in direction of the sounds. Ethan reaches a slightly opened door, smoke escaping from the interstice. The door first appears to be stuck, when suddenly it opens in front of Ethan.

CUT

We are in the showers. We hear the dripping sound of water (or so it seems) falling upon the floor. At the back, the figure of ETHAN in the frame of the door. ETHAN’s torch reveals the figure of what looks like a mutilated body lying on the floor. Suddenly resonates a sound in the air duct right above him. ETHAN speeds up.

CUT

ETHAN arrives to another door he opens in a loud and metallic sound.

CUT

We are in the control room. ETHAN steps in. We are behind ETHAN, following him. In front of him is a gigantic mess, and again these large stains of blood here and there. Some of them dripping from inside eviscerated machines, others from the seats… All of a sudden ETHAN’s face lights up. One of the screens seems to work. It shows a face talking to the viewer.

SITE MANAGER

My name’s Delmot. I was in charge of the place before everything went to shit. I came back in here because I’m freezing to death outside but, if you’re reading this and you have a transport or any way to leave, do not stay there. Fly away as soon as you can. THEY are everywhere... The next site is about thirty-eight miles West. I think I can find some gear somewhere that should protect me…hopefully. If anybody survived all this, they will go there for sure. I…I really hope the next site is safe and that somebody else made it out… Over.

The video ends here then start again from the start. ETHAN stares at the screen for a moment.

SARA (From ETHAN’s gear microphone)

Captain do you copy?

It brings Ethan back into reality in a start.

ETHAN

Affirmative Sara. Isaac ain’t there, all I’ve found are remnants of death. I don’t know what happened but we’d better go now.

SARA

Static noises…Got it Cap’, I’ve found another industrial plant further West.

ETHAN

Ok then, this is where we’ll search next. I’m heading back to-

A violent blow beneath his feet surprises him, and he throws him off balance. ETHAN stands back upon his feet and look in front of him. Hits, even stronger than before deform the floor. ETHAN steps back of fright. Claws pierces the floor. ETHAN rushes to the door. The claws tearing the floor apart are now followed by long, skinny and deformed arms. ETHAN throws himself through the gap of the door. The door closes behind him. ETHAN lays his back on the thick door.

ETHAN

Sara, something’s attacking me..! Non identified, but very aggressive. I’m heading back to where I came from, take off now and deploy the grab’ !

Suddenly the clawed hand beats the door behind ETHAN. He stands back upon his feet and rush into the hallway. On a turn, he slips and fall, then start running again. His suit is full of blood. Behind him a terrifying and inhuman growl can be heard. ETHAN sees an unlock ventilation hatch. He opens it completely then throw himself in. In this confined space, ETHAN tries hard to control his breathe and turn off his light. After seconds of total silence, something that looks like a deformed human foot passes in front of the railings, then stop. We hear the sound of a heavy and struggling breathing. In the dark, ETHAN’s eyes are the only things we can see. Blood is dripping from the creature and across the railing, onto ETHAN. He tries to contain himself. The creature walks away. ETHAN waits a few more seconds before taking his breath again. He carefully sneaks out of his hiding place and rushes into another room.

CUT

ETHAN takes a look around him. He finds himself in a storage room full of tools and several different mining devices. Looking for something he could use as a weapon, he finds the perfect thing in a rock-breaker device.

ETHAN (whispering)

Sara, do you copy?

SARA

Yes Captain, what is going on? I am trying to hold my position but the storm is making it almost impossible.

ETHAN (whispering)

I had to hide, I’ve never seen anything like that… I’ll be there soon, hold on.

CUT

ETHAN leaves the room and stands in front of the ventilation hatch. At the other end stands the figure of the creature.

ETHAN immediately freezes, holding on tight to his makeshift weapon, then slowly get back, eyes on the creature. Suddenly, the radio loudly crackles.

SARA

Hey Ethan ! This is getting out of control over here I can’t hold it, move!

The creature spins around. ETHAN is gone. The creature walks away, growling. We move towards the door and ETHAN is here, hiding behind.

ETHAN (whispering)

Fuckin’ hell…

He turns his radio off then walks away, his suit-light swiping around.

CUT

We are at a junction. At the end of the hallway, we can only hear ETHAN’s breathing. He smiles out of relief, and walks in the direction of the junction. Suddenly on the right side appears something. ETHAN steps back, alert. As he points it out with his light, the creature appears. It hits Ethan with his claws. ETHAN is thrown in the air, his weapon slides away on the floor. ETHAN stands back up the face scratched, as the creature arrives behind him. He faces it. The creature tries to hit him again. ETHAN dodges. The creature gets angrier and growls. ETHAN rushes to his weapon on the floor. As he goes to catch it, he notices something in the corner of the room, red and bright. Tied upon the wall are hanging some gas pumps, stamped of the “inflammable” sign. ETHAN stands up and run. The creature rusn and follow him. ETHAN throws himself behind some crates. The creature is falling upon him. ETHAN aims for the pumps. But another blow from the creature severs his deep into the left shoulder. The weapon falls upon the floor again. ETHAN, injured and exhausted, stares in the small eyes of the creature, black and full of anger.

ETHAN

You ugly son of a bitch.

The creature raises its sharpest claw and screams before giving the final blow. ETHAN is straight upon his knees. Suddenly the face of ETHAN is sprayed of a huge amount of blood. The creature is standing still for a few seconds, then collapses on the floor. Behind it, frightened, SARA is standing with ETHAN’s weapon in her hand.

SARA

(With a finger on her ear) I found him… Get us out of here.

MALE VOICE (from the microphone)

Copy, hang on!

ETHAN sees a rope hanging behind SARA.

SARA (Giving his weapon to ETHAN)

You were looking for this, right?

ETHAN takes the weapon.

ETHAN

Let’s leave this hell of a place.

SARA (To the pilot)

Get us out.

MALE VOICE from the microphone

Hang on please Ladies and Gentlemen, we’ve been warned of a few turbulences in the area!

SARA and ETHAN are lifted up by the rope, through a vertical pipe. But a new creature grabs one of SARA’S feet. They both try to kick it in the face to release SARA’s leg when ETHAN spots some more pumps and bottle of gas behind the creature. SARA gives a last hard kick to the creature which falls down, and as they start to be lifted again into the pipe, and the creature stares and screams at its preys now out of reach, ETHAN aims and shoot right in the pile of gas bottles. They explode in a firestorm. The explosion tears the screaming creature to shred and the strong thrust of air violently throws ETHAN and SARA up into the pipe.

CUT

The firestorm engulfs every hallways, rooms and pipes. It follows ETHAN and SARA and start to reach and burn their feet just when they finally burst out of the pipe, and the firestorm spreads out in a blast.

CUT

ETHAN and SARA are on board. ETHAN closes the airlock of the ship. SARA unties herself. ETHAN takes a first aid kit then sits on the floor of the ship. She tenderly looks at him. She sits next to him. ETHAN’s right shoulder is badly wounded.

SARA (Examining his shoulder)

You okay?

ETHAN (Grunting)

Hurts like the devil.

SARA takes the bandage out of the kit. ETHAN doesn’t say a thing. He stares at her, his look becomes less upset and progressively sweeter.

SARA

Here, ‘should do.

SARA stands up and heads for the control area. ETHAN keeps looking at her.

ETHAN

Sara.

SARA turns back. There is a moment of awkward silence.

ETHAN

Thank you.

SARA gives him a smile from the edge of her lips, then nod. The pilot takes a peek at them, then turn back with a smile upon his face.

SARA

So what do we do now?

ETHAN painfully stands back upon his feet, leaning on the wall.

ETHAN

We’re heading West. Isaac might be there and he’s not alone… They need us. And we’re coming for them.

The ZEUS turns on his boosters, then penetrates the storm, disappearing inside.
