Horia's Manor

Only five out of twenty eight concepts were to be picked by a jury of teachers and professionals as the graduation projects for my bachelor in game design.

My concept "HMAT" (like we call it now internally), was amongst the five chosen projects. From this moment on in April 2022, it has become the biggest prototype my team (called RavenHouse) and I have ever worked on.

Here's the Game Design Document of the game.
Here's the Narrative Bible of the game.
Here's a gameplay demonstration of the prototype.

In a fictional region of 19th century Eastern Europe, a daring and smart woman named Lenore takes up a post of housekeeper in an ancient and remote mansion, in order to find her grandmother again, and unveil the dark secrets of the edifice...

The Housekeeper
Age : 33 years old
Lenore lost her mother, a prostitute, when she still was a toddler. Her father was just another customer.
Then up to the age of 7, Lenore was raised by her grandmother.

Eventually, finances ran low, and she as well had to leave Lenore to go to work in a remote mansion far away in the region of AldeÅŸ-Tepan, leaving Lenore to a couple of honest and good friends who then raised Lenore as their own child.
Years passing, Lenore and her grandma never stopped writing to each other... Until the fateful day a last terribly worrying  letter arrived from the mansion.
Something strange but definitely wrong had happened in this estate.

That was enough for Lenore. It was her turn to leave home behind, penetrate the dreadful mansion, and find her grandmother again.
And eventually, to unveil the mansion's secrets...

The
Horia's Manor

"The Master Returns", Andreas Rocha

Age : More than 500 years old
The mansion of the Horia family is ancient, and historically has always belonged to them.
Blessed by the orthodox orders right after its construction like the tradition demands, it hosted multiple generations of the family who thrived in its midst through centuries.
But something happened in these past years that seemed to awaken the ancient entity.
A boy, who was not destined to come to life, was born. From this moment on the Manor decided that this child was its own. And it started to dispose of anyone who did not approve or stepped in between.
No one knows exactly what is this entity, since when has it been conscious, and what exactly it can do.
One thing's for sure, it claimed the boy as its own, and then everything changed.

Mariusz Horia

"The Boy",
W.B Bell

Age : 5 years old
Mariusz Horia is the last-born child of the Horia's legacy. And its last survivor as well.
Miraculously born as the only child from his presumably infertile mother Mircela, Mariusz always felt right at home in the mansion. Not once has a knee been scratched climbing down the stairs, no toy had ever been lost in one of the countless rooms and corridors of the vast building.
He was raised with love and discipline by his parents and the twenty or so servants who worked for its care and the care of the mansion. Until they started to disappear.
Quickly, those of them who were left ran away from this doomed place, until Mariusz was left all alone in Horia's Manor.
For weeks, he lived alone, not quite understanding what was happening to him. Until a stranger knocked at the door...

Father Rodovan

 "Legend"

B. Helgeland

Father Rodovan was part of an itinerant group of orthodox priests and wise men, wandering from village to village in AldeÅŸ-Tepan to provide moral support and life advice to the poor and the weary.
Once his group arrived in a village nearby, they dispersed into the different homes, offering help to anyone.
Father Rodovan's path led him right onto the doors of the Horia's Manor. And as soon as he stepped in, he was struck by two things.
Firstly, the seemingly only resident of the castle was a young boy, not older than 6.  Secondly, Father Rodovan immediately felt a sort of corruption in the midst of the mansion. Something unfathomable, indefinable was lurking in the air, and in the darkness of the rooms and corridors. A dark entity.
Since then, Father Rodovan locked himself in and took full responsibility of purging the manor, and save the boy.
